I already wrote about books for NaBlaPoMo, but y’all will just have to bear with me repeating myself! Last year my sister turned me on to Laura Lippman’s Baltimore-based Tess Monaghan mysteries. She loaned me the first book in the series, and I was hooked. Tess is an engaging character, and the stories are well crafted, but the clincher is how well the author captures the distinctive “culture” of Baltimore (aka where trends come to die). I was stalled a bit in continuing, however, because my library does not have copies of the earlier books in the series, and it really bugs me to read them out of order. So I finally had to buy my own copy, which I really did not mind, and it’s been sitting here on the computer desk till I get around to adding it to my bookcase.

Hair today …

The length of my hair has varied from boyishly short when I was in grade school to well down my back when I was in high school. Most of my adult life, however, it has been somewhere around shoulder length give or take a few inches either way. No matter what length, however, myspouse is always annoyed when I get it cut. My hair is fairly fine and does not have much body, but I have a lot of it, so it can be a challenge to do anything with it. I do like long hair too, but when it’s limp and lifeless it’s not very attractive. Okay, so Saturday I got my hair cut. It’s probably as short as it’s been since I first met myspouse. I was sure he was going to hate it, but instead he complemented me first thing when I walked in the door! Several other people at church and work have complemented me too, so I guess I have found my optimum hair length.

In other news, I’m a bachelor for a few days while myspouse is off on a business trip.

So, would anybody else notice or care if I didn’t close out a month of posting by not posting? Maybe not, but I would care. Anyway, it doesn’t seem as if an entire month has passed. I didn’t completely recover my desk, but I did unearth a few things I needed and consolidated my movies all in one place. It may not be much, but it’s better than nothing. Now, on to December!

Do you put up decorations for the holidays? If so, when do the decorations go up and when do you take them down?

We usually put up the Christmas decorations soon after Thanksgiving, but it looks like it might be a little late this year. The main reason for that is because there are boxes of “stuff” where the tree is supposed to go. I don’t feel like dealing with it at the moment. Maybe some time in the next week or so, but not now. Once they do go up, though, they stay in place until at least Epiphany. Some years I have taken down the tree while watching the Super Bowl.

Among the best books I have read are: To Kill A Mockingbird, Pride and Prejudice, and The Hobbit. Each has the essential elements, which are well-developed characters and a sound plot, presented by way of a distinctive but accessible writing style. Some of the so-called classics fall flat, in my opinion, but these three have earned the designation.

One nice thing about reading for pleasure (as opposed to all those “required” books in school) is that I can put down a book if I really don’t like it. I’ve done that more than once, when I realized that I didn’t really care what happened or the writing was so bad it detracted from the experience. Then there are the books that I did stick with to the end only to be disappointed. One of these was Suzanne’s Diary for Nicholas. I loathed the end. Instead of being engaging and intriguing, I found it to be highly manipulative. I didn’t just want to throw the book across the room; I wanted to drop it off the highest building right into the deepest ocean.

Bad books can be fun, though. Several years ago a friend of mine circulated a vanity publication she had received during the course of her job as a books editor. She encouraged us to write comments in the margin and send it on to another member of our circle of friends. I was about the third or fourth one of us to receive the package. It was indeed an awful book – predictable plot, shallow characters, stilted sex scenes, and continuity problems – but reading the comments and contributing my own made it an entertaining experience, kind of like a serial literary version of “Mystery Science Theater.”

After two big meals yesterday, I should probably at least take a good long walk, but once again the weather is Londonesque. We have gotten into a routine the last few years of spending the afternoon with myspouse’s family and then heading to my sister’s house for a second dinner with my family. Both meals include the traditional foods, but sometimes my sister gets a little experimental with the side dishes or serves a protein other than turkey. Tomorrow it will be ham at her house. Some time between now and then I need to whip up a green bean casserole and finish a little beading project for my niece. I’m so glad we got out of work early today!

Whatever was bugging me, it’s not bugging me anymore. I came home early yesterday and slept most of the afternoon, and that seemed to do the trick. The office is an odd mixture of calm and frantic this week: many of my co-workers are on gone ahead of the holiday, but the projects are still there. Still, it is a bit relaxed with certain people gone, and that’s always a plus. Empty offices did not contribute to empty roads, however. Between the drizzly rain and the travelers passing through on their way to somewhere else, my commute home was ridiculous. At last I made it, and now I’m all showered and happy and ready to have some cocoa.

Indigestion

Ugh. I ate too much for dinner and was up half the night with indigestion. This is never good, and today it's not good at all. We have a big push to get some projects done before the holiday, and then tonight I have a meeting I should attend. It also doesn't help that I only found the remote a few minutes ago to change the channel away from an infomercial about a pounds-melting exercise program. Okay, I guess I need to get to it.

Late Autumn Thoughts

I’m having a somewhat unstructured Sunday afternoon. I just watched two football games that the local teams should have won but didn’t, and I’m thinking about taking a little walk around the neighborhood before dinnertime. Meanwhile, here are a few thoughts that have been rattling around in my head today.

• Was it this mild last year? I really can’t remember one way or the other. In any case, I’ve only needed to wear my heavy coat for a few days, and those were in OCTOBER. Some days I haven’t even needed to wear my jacket.
• Why do people insist on separating God and science? To me they are inexorably inter-related. Do you really think this intricate, extremely complex world sprang into life all on its own?
• How did it get to be late November already? What on earth am I going to give my friends and family for Christmas? I don’t even know what I want to receive.
• When is the new research assistant going to start? Will we have some prior notice, or will she just show up one day needing office space? How will we re-distribute the workload?
• Some time this week I have to get ingredients for my contributions to two Thanksgiving dinners. That might be a slight challenge, since I have activities every evening till then.
• I didn’t know Star Trek was the “best reviewed” movie of the year. Really? I mean, it’s good and all …
• Someday I will get my desk cleaned off and it will stay that way.
• Too bad about the football games, but the Yankees’ championship win will carry me through the winter.
• What the heck is going on with LJ formatting lately?

I don’t especially have anything to say tonight. The weekly computer scan runs on Friday nights, and that slows down the system a bit for a multi-tasker like me. Maybe I will get back to the great desk project over the weekend – I got a little side-tracked by another stupid domestic project – or maybe I will find something else to do with myself.
